ST: Pointy pointy

Final episode on this disc is Dagger of the Mind. We start out with an convict escaping from a penal colony and getting loose on the Enterprise. No time is wasted, he clocks a red-shirted crewman in less than 5 minutes. Another couple minutes, another redshirt down and he's got a phaser. Plot twists after we move to hyperspace.

Turns out that the escaped convict is not what he seems. Of course, it looks like the inmates have taken over and imprisoned the wardens and doctors. Also, it will probably take forever for the Enterprise to figure out what's going on.

Once again Kirk refuses to give any credence to his colleague. Then he's invited down to the surface. "Come into my parlour."

Oh, noes! KSSP strikes again! Kirk has to beam down with a psychiatrist and it turns out to be a hot chick who he apparently had a fling with during a Christmas party? Now it's all awkward that he has to work and be professional. Let this be a lesson to you; never get romantically involved with anyone at work.

The man they got to play the mentally damaged man does a great job. Ooh! And Spock is going to use a Vulcan mind-meld. First time on the series; let's see how closely it matches the later instances. It's not the same, he uses two hands placed on the top of his head and under his chin. There's a talking bit that Spock uses to put him in a hypnotic state.

Kirk, being the brilliant commander that he is, decides to use the strange device on himself that he knows damaged the man on his ship. Then he puts the woman he jilted in charge. Then, after knowing it works and he is fully unaware of it when it happens, he says, "Nah, once isn't enough, let's do it again."

Sure enough, the bad guys walk in and take over and put Kirk in a bind.

Luckily the bad guys once again have a base where the air conditioning ducts are large enough for you to drive a car through. But will they do anything with the captain's hypnosis that caused him to have a raging passion for the beautiful lady-doctor? Nope. Used once more for a joke and then never mentioned again.
